China continues to dominate the world of badminton, with four male players and four women players in the Top 10, and the reigning Olympic Champion Dan Lin.

Badminton has never been a spectator sport and it gets no television coverage in the UK, unless a British pair are doing well. But the Badminton World Federation wants to change all that and raise the profile of the sport.

The leading badminton organisation is aiming to get the game more television coverage, as well as making it more spectator friendly. It is a sport for people of all ages, skill levels and cultural backgrounds, yet it fails to get the high profile that surrounds tennis.

In the UK especially, it is popular as a recreational activity, a way of keeping fit, and improving your social life. Every week keen players turn up in gyms and halls all over the country to play the game for fun. While tennis is taught in schools, not many have badminton on their curriculum.

The Chinese dominate the game and three-time World Champion, Dan Lin, is hoping to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics to defend his title. He won the individual Gold Medal at the 2008 Bejing Olympics, but has lost his form of late and also his World Number 1 ranking to Chong Wei Lee.

The 27 year old from Longyan, Fujian, China is currently ranked Number 3 after dominating the game for over two years. Famous for his jumping smash, he won the World Championships Cup in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The rankings are published every Thursday on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website.
